Day 56: Colosseum & Old Bear

Monday, October 21st
Last night was our first crazy night of the whole trip. Needless to say, we slept in this morning. After gathering ourselves, we headed towards the Colosseum. We stopped at a restaurant along our way that wasn’t the best. It was called Piazza Madama. It looked good when we first walked up. My salad came out in a bowl of water, and even though I didn’t touch it or eat it, but they still charged us. Christopher’s gnocchi wasn’t good at all, but he stomached half of it. At least our coffee was good! LOL!
Next, we stumbled across Church Sant’Ivo allá Sapienza. It was another gorgeous church. All of the churches here are breathtaking. We made some silly videos while we were here.
We saw a nice looking store with good prices, so we snagged some plane t-shirts for Christopher that were all on sale for 9 Euros each!
We then stumbled across the Monument of Victor Emmanuel II. We walked up all the stairs and had a beautiful view of Rome and could even see the Colosseum in the background. We then walked along the water and saw the Mouth of Truth and some other monuments that we had no idea what they were or who the statues were of, but we took it all in, enjoying every moment.
We finally arrived to the Colosseum. We found some beautiful views around the back where we took some photos with less crowds. We then walked around all of the historical areas nearby. All the ruins are truly incredible. It’s so crazy to think how old everything is and how they built this before machines. Christopher was looking up facts about the Roman Empire and colosseum and reading them as we walked. Traveling is the best way to learn!
We made our way back to our hotel where we relaxed and re-grouped for a minute before heading out to dinner.
We went and made reservations at a restaurant called Old Bear. It was a little hidden gem that Christopher found just by looking up reviews on nearby restaurants.
We went around the corner to grab a little appetizer before we came back. Christopher got to try Roman style Gnocchi, which wasn’t his favorite cause it’s a different texture, but it was still a great flavor. I got some delicious grilled chicken. Christopher really enjoyed the tiramisu for dessert and we both loved the ice cream that came with the apple pie special of the day!
We came back home and got a good nights rest after a fun filled day of adventure. We are so excited to set sail tomorrow!
My highlight was goofing off and making silly videos at one of the churches we stopped by. We were making fun transition reels of “falling in” to the screen. Christopher’s highlight was discovering Old Bear. This is definitely a must if you’re ever in Rome! The food was incredible, the staff was lovely, and everyone around us was having such a cheerful time. We really enjoyed it and would have ate here everyday if we would have discovered it earlier!
